This series of tests are to check how cable trays and their accessories may contribute to propagating fire. They are only applicable to insulating or compound materials.

Test methods

There are two test types:

Fire hazard test: The device is subjected to an abnormal heat source similar to one that would be produced during an electrical fault, and must report a given inflammability. The test method is governed by IEC 60695-2-11, glow wire flammability test method.

Fire propagation: The objective of this test is to define the ability of trays to ignite, and if they do, if limited spread of fire takes place. The test method is governed by IEC 60695-11-2 by means of which a 1 kW flame is applied on an assembled set of the product.

This set of tests is to verify the ability of cable trays and their accessories to withstand certain weather and atmospheric conditions during the time the installation is in service. They are only applicable to compound or metallic materials.

Test methods

The test method is based on checking the resistance to corrosion of the tray and accessories according to the rating of the materials defined in the standard. There are basically two procedures:

• ISO 2178/2808 Standard: This permits determining the thickness of the zinc coating covering the stainless steel the tray is made from, and its resistance to corrosion, based on the ratings defined in the standard.

• Neutral saline mist according to ISO 9227 in the case of alloy trays other than stainless steel and the rating defined in the standard.

The objective of this test is to determine whether the tray meets suitable electrical properties since the purpose of the product is to channel cables from one point to another in an installation.

Test methods

The test method depends on the type of material the tray is made from.

Metal trays: For this type of tray the continuity is measured to ensure it guarantees equipotential connection and a possible earth connection between sections of the product and the joints.

Insulating material trays: This type of trays must guarantee that no electrical currents pass through it when carrying cables. The resistivity value between different sections and joints of the trays is measured.

The objective of this test is to determine whether the tray has sufficient mechanical strength to withstand hidden stresses.

Test methods

The test method is based on the standard IEC 600068-2-75 which defines an impact on the test object using a pendulum hammer in accordance with the specifications defined by the manufacturer. The product is impacted at different points.

These specifications will define the weight and height from which the hammer strikes.

Approximate energy (J)

Hammer weight (kg)

Fall height (mm)

2

0.5

400

5

1.7

295

10

5

200

20

5

400

50

10

500

If the test is applied to a tray made from an insulating material, it will need to be prepared in advance.
