This series of tests are to check how pipe systems for electrical ducting may contribute to propagating fire. They are only applicable to insulating or compound materials.

Test methods

Several test types are employed:

Fire hazard test: The device is subjected to an abnormal heat source similar to one that would be produced during an electrical fault, and must report a given inflammability. The test method is governed by IEC 60695-2-11, glow wire flammability test method.

Fire propagation: The objective of this test is to define the ability of a system to ignite, and if it does, if limited spread of fire takes place. The test method is governed by IEC 60695-11-2 by means of which a 1 kW flame is applied on an assembled set of the product.

Reaction to fire: This test measures the halogen content in the gases emitted during a fire in accordance with IEC 60754-2.

Test methods

The methodology is based on introducing the test sample in a furnace for a set period of time. After heat treatment, a load is applied to the pipe in accordance with its rating. When the load is removed, it must be possible to pass a specific calibre through the inside of the pipe.

The objective of this set of tests is to define the capacity of a pipe system to withstand necessary forces for the equipment to operate, during and after installation, and also suitable mechanical strength.

Test methods

Depending on the mechanical property to be tested, different methods are applied:

Compression test: The pipe system is subjected to compression forces according to its rating over the wireframe shell of the circumference over a given period of time.

Impact test: Sudden bangs are applied to the pipe system using a pendulum hammer, whose weight and height of impact are defined by the pipe rating.

Curving test: This test is only applicable to bendable and rigid pipes, and it is based on consecutively bending the pipe to a given radius using a rotating transmission system, to ensure that the product does not undergo significant deterioration after the test.

Tensile test: The pipe system is subjected to tensile forces according to the rating over the wireframe shell of the circumference over a given period of time.

Flexion test: This test is only applicable to flexible pipes. The test sample is subjected to 5000 alternate flexures using an oscillating arm with a given cadence to ensure that the product does not suffer significant deterioration after the test.

Pinch test: This test consists of attaching a set of clips to the system that apply a given force of stricture to it. After subjecting the pipe to a certain temperature, it must allow a given calibre to pass through. Applicable to rigid or bendable pipes.

Suspended load: This is defined for specifically rated pipes. The system to be tested is suspended from a horizontal surface and a given working load is applied following the instructions defined by the manufacturer over a given period of time.

The objective of this test is to determine whether the pipe system meets suitable electrical properties since the purpose of the product is to channel cables from one point to another under safe conditions in an installation.

Test methods

The test method depends on the type of material the ducting system consists of.

Metal pipe systems: For this type of product the continuity is measured to ensure it guarantees equipotential connection and a possible earth connection between sections of the product and the joints.

Insulating or compound insulating material pipe systems: Both the pipe and its accessories must ensure that no electrical currents run through it as a result of housing the cable. The following items are measured:

Voltage supported at industrial frequency.

Resistance of the continuous voltage insulation.

Test methods

Several test methods are employed:

Degree of protection of the enclosure: The IP rating of the pipe system in regard to liquids and solids entering according to IEC 60529 is determined.

Resistance to corrosion: This is applicable to metal and compound pipes according to the manufacturer’s rating, consisting of applying different acidic solutions and solvents to it.
